The Very Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche Program in Edmonton
August 6th to 8th, 2010

The program will be held at the Pleasant View Community League hall at 10860 - 57 Avenue, Edmonton.

Teachings:

On Friday evening, August 6th, 7:30 pm, Thrangu Rinpoche will give a public talk on Buddhism and the Environment: When Snow Mountains Wear Black Hats. The great Buddhist teacher Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) made reference to a dangerous future "when the snow mountains wear black hats".

When Snow Mountains Wear Black Hats is also the chapter title of a dialogue with the Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche in the recently published book A Buddhist Response to The Climate Emergency (edited by Stanley, Joy, and Dorje, Wisdom Publications, 2009). An Aspirational Prayer to Avert Global Warming, composed by Thrangu Rinpoche, initiated the development of the book. On Saturday, August 7th, Thrangu Rinpoche will give teachings on Buddha Nature and Buddhahood including The Ten Powers of the Buddha.

Empowerment:

On Sunday, August 8th, Thrangu Rinpoche will give the Refuge and Bodhisattva vow ceremonies and the empowerment of Yellow Zambhala.

Yellow Zambhala (Tibetan: Dzambhala Serpo) is the deity of wealth in Tibetan Buddhism. Zambhala is a protector of the dharma. He helps people attain a more auspicious life and eliminate poverty so that they may practice the Dharma. Practicing Zambhala can also help you to get rid of the insecurity of financial worries. More importantly, his practice helps you attain spiritual wealth, eliminate greed and become a better person.

All proceeds will be offered to Thrangu Rinpoche and the Lamas on behalf of participants at the end of the program. It is also customary to offer individual donations to Rinpoche and the Lamas during the empowerment ceremony.

The Four Dharmas of Gampopa Study Course - Thursdays April 15th to May 20th

Please join us for a six week course on "The Four Dharmas of Gampopa" teachings by the Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche at our centre, 10502-70 Avenue, on Thursday evenings starting April 15th to May 20th, 7:00pm - 8:30pm.

Je Gampopa (1079 - 1153 C.E.), a student of the famous Tibetan yogi Milarepa, is one of the main lineage holders of the Kagyu lineage in Tibet. He established the first Kagyu monastery and is known for writing the Jewel Ornament of Liberation.

At each class, we will play a 40 minute teaching by Thrangu Rinpoche on DVD, followed by questions and answers and discussion led by Resident Lama, Ani Kunsang. Participants may also benefit from reading the booklet entitled The Four Dharmas of Gampopa that is available for download on Rinpoche’s website at: http://www.rinpoche.com/teachings/4dharmas.pdf

This course is recommended for anyone who is new to Tibetan Buddhism but will also be of interest to more experienced students. Everyone is welcome. There is no cost for the course. Participants may make a donation to Karma Tashi Ling if they wish.

Thursdays Oct. 15th to Nov. 26th - Teachings by Ani Kunsang, Resident Lama

Resident Lama, Ani Kunsang, will give teachings on "Buddhism for beginners". The teachings will be given at our centre, 10502-70 Avenue, on Thursday evenings starting October 15 - November 26, 2009, from 7pm - 8pm, followed by a question and answer period. Tea and cookies will be served thereafter. Everyone is welcome.

These sessions are particularly recommended for anyone who is new to Tibetan Buddhism and interested in learning more. This will be a good opportunity to ask questions and have discussion. Participants are welcome to attend any or all sessions.

There is no cost for the teachings. Participants may make a donation to Karma Tashi Ling if they wish.

Mondays July 6th to 27th - Teachings by Ani Kunsang, Resident Lama

Resident Lama, Ani Kunsang, will give introductory teachings on Monday evenings in July at 7:00 pm, starting July 6th. These sessions are particularly recommended for anyone who is new to Tibetan Buddhism and interested in learning more. This will be a good opportunity to ask questions and have discussion. Participants are welcome to attend any or all sessions.

The first two week’s teachings will be an introduction to Chenresig practice. Please see our Dharma Practice section on the website for a description. The second two weeks will be on the Four Immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

There is no cost for the teachings. Participants may make a donation to Karma Tashi Ling if they wish.

June 7 to June 9, 2009 - Teaching Visit by Khenpo Chonyi Rangdrol

Karma Tashi Ling Society will host the visit of Khenpo Chonyi Rangdrol from Thrangu Monastery, and Principal of Shree Mangal Dvip School in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Khenpo Chonyi Rangdol was born on the16th July, 1977. He entered into Thrangu Tashi Choling Monastery (monastery founded by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche in Boudha, Katmandu, Nepal) in 1983 at the age of six. He was brought to monastery by his uncle Lama Sonam Wangchuk, who is also a monk of the same monastery.

Khenpo Chonyi started learning Tibetan reading and writing, memorizing texts and monastic prayers. In 1987, he went to Shree Mangal Dvip School, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche's school for Himalayan children, to learn modern education. Rinpoche's wish of establishing this school is to preserve Himalayan culture, language and Buddha Dharma and give modern education not only to lay children but also to monks and nuns. Khenpo was one of the lucky monks to get this opportunity. At school he learnt English, Maths, Science, Nepali and Social Studies for seven years.

In 1994, he went to Namo Buddha Institute for higher Buddhist studies at Namo Buddha, Nepal. He studied five major Buddhist texts like Buddhist philosophy, science, logic and morality for 5 years. After graduating the higher Buddhist studies (BA in Buddhist Philosophy), be became the tutor for young monks who are studying at the pre-college of Buddhist philosophy. He gave his service as a tutor for two years. He took full ordination from Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche together with other senior monks.

In 2000, he became the principal of Shree Mangal Dvip Branch school at Namo Buddha. There he took full responsibility of both academic and hostel duties for two years. Rinpoche established Shree Mangal Dvip Branch school for monks at Namo Buddha so that Shree Mangal Dvip main school would have more space for lay children.

In 2003, he was offered the title "Khenpo" which means Abbot and is analogous to having an MA in Buddhist Philosophy, by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. As he is very skilled in both Buddhist and Modern education, Rinpoche appointed him as the a principal of Shree Mangal Dvip Main school in 2003 and he has continued this job for the last six years. At the same time, he is responsible for Thrangu Monastery administration job and Namo Buddha monastery management. He also takes care of Rinpoche's guest house in Boudha.

Fridays 7pm - Teachings (on DVD) by the Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche

Friday evenings at 7pm starting February 27, 2009.

Karma Tashi Ling has a collection of teachings on DVD by the Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche, and other Karma Kagyu teachers including Tsitu Rinpoche and Mingyur Rinpoche.

In past years, some of us have met on Friday evenings to take in some of these teachings and have discussion. It has always been very beneficial for everyone participating.

We are starting up a study group again on Friday evenings, starting February 27th. Anyone interested is welcome to join us at the centre on any Friday evening at 7pm.

To get us started on the first Friday evening, we will play the DVD of a public talk given by Thrangu Rinpoche entitled: Developing a Spiritual Mind: A public talk on the Four Immeasurables.

After the first DVD teaching, the group of participants can decide what teachings we would like to study next as a group and we will publish the dates on the website. We will try to match the interests of everyone participating as much as possible.

October 16th to November 20th - Introduction to Buddhist Teachings and Meditation

Resident Lama, Ani Kunsang, will give introductory teachings on Buddhism and meditation on Thursday evenings, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, starting October 16th and continuing until at least November 20th. These sessions are particularly recommended for new members and anyone who is new to Buddhism and interested in learning more. This will be a good opportunity to ask questions and have discussion. Participants are welcome to attend any or all sessions.

August 29 to 31, 2008 - Teaching Visit by Tulku Damcho Rinpoche

Karma Tashi Ling is very pleased to host the first visit of Tulku Damcho Rinpoche to Edmonton at the end of August.

Tulku Damcho Rinpoche will give an introductory talk on Friday evening entitled Meditation: Benefiting Daily Life, and a weekend teaching program on Creation and Completion.

Creation and completion are the two stages of meditating on wisdom deities in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche explains:

"In practice, creation stage refers to the visualization of the deities…and the visualization and recitation of mantras and so forth. Completion stage refers to the dissolution of such visualizations into emptiness."

Tulku Damcho Rinpoche will give the Chenresig empowerment on Sunday afternoon. Chenresig is the Tibetan name for the wisdom deity of loving-kindness and compassion. Chenresig is the embodiment of these qualities that are inherent in all of us.

Anyone is welcome to attend for all or part of the program. We encourage people who are new to Buddhism to consider attending the teachings by Rinpoche. It is very auspicious to receive a visit from a Rinpoche, and still a rare opportunity in Edmonton.

June 21st/22nd - Karma Tashi Ling Garage Sale

Our garage sale is scheduled to take place the weekend of June 21st/22nd. Anybody wishing to donate articles should bring them at least four days prior to the sale for sorting and pricing. We thank everyone in advance for their generous help and their donations of articles for sale.

April 26th/27th - Practice Weekend with Lama Tashi Dondup

Karma Tashi Ling is very pleased to announce the visit of Lama Tashi Dondup to our centre, the weekend of April 26 and 27, 2008. Lama Tashi is the resident teacher of the Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche's centre in Toronto. He is an esteemed teacher and dear friend of Karma Tashi Ling and has visited Edmonton many times to give teachings and lead practice retreats. For more information about Lama Tashi Dondup and the Toronto centre, please visit their web site at www.ktzl.org. We are honoured that Lama Tashi will lead a practice weekend at Karma Tashi Ling centre (10502-70 Avenue, lower level). We encourage members, friends, and people who are new to Tibetan Buddhism to consider attending for all or part of the weekend. It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Lama Tashi and participate in meditation and Tibetan Buddhist practices. Lama Tashi will give the empowerment of Manjusri, the bodhisattva personifying supreme wisdom.

Februrary 7th - Losar

Losar is the Tibetan new year according to the lunar calendar. This year is the year of the earth rat, 2135. This years Losar celebration will consist of a practice commencing at 7:00 pm where we will be reciting the twelve deeds of the Buddha followed by tea and refreshments.

Februrary 4th - Mahamudra Studies Begin

The first of many Mahamudra study sessions will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Karma Tashi Ling Centre. Anyone is welcome to join. A schedule and relevant study materials can be found on our 'Mahamudra' page.
